PROBIOTICS are ‘good’ bacteria which help keep your gut healthy and can be found in a number of fermented foods. However an expert says consuming them in supplement form can often be better.

Full of live bacteria and yeasts, probiotics are great for the digestive system and have a number of other health benefits for mental health, immunity and obesity.

While it can be helpful to consume them every day, they’re particularly essential after a gastrointestinal infection or after taking antibiotics, which can negatively affect the diversity of your microbiome.

They can be found naturally in fermented foods – where “good” bacteria breaks down the nutrients into a more digestible form, and “bad” bacteria is kept under control.

These include kefir, sauerkraut, kombucha, kimchi, miso, yoghurt and sourdough bread.

Two particular strains of bacteria, lactobacillus and bifidobacterium, have been found by research to be particularly beneficial to your gut.

Awareness of probiotics – and more recently prebiotics, which promote the growth of beneficial organisms in the intestine in order for probiotics to flourish – is increasing.

The global prebiotic and probiotic yoghurt market alone is expected to grow by 6.5 per cent between now and 2022.

However, there’s still much confusion over what to take and how.
